Mosquito Control Program

Village wide mosquito control spraying will begin July 10, 2023 and will be done every week  at sundown during the season.

Cancellation for Mosquito Spraying reasons are listed below.

The Village of Middlefield Mosquito program consists of five components:

  1. Education and Information. This component consists of practices for mosquito larva reduction such as applying repellents and reducing mosquito breeding sites. Information is made available to the public concerning how to reduce mosquito populations by efforts they can do to clean-up mosquito breeding areas that may exist on private properties.
  2. Surveillance identifies locations where mosquito populations are building; and entails the trapping of mosquito specimens that are tested for viruses.
  3. After notification to the affected areas, the Village will begin application of larvicide utilizing Natural-XRT Larvicide to treat breeding areas where the eggs, larvae, pupae are found, distributing dunks before they become adult mosquitoes.
  4. After notification the the affected areas, the Village will begin roadside application of adult spray, in areas where adult mosquitoes are found to be in numbers sufficient to warrant spraying of the area.  Spraying of the street areas including ditches and front yard areas with a truck mounted sprayer.  Property owners/tenants will have the ability to fill out the Property Exclusion from Pesticides by May 31, 2023, 4pm to decline the spraying in front of their property or residence. Spraying will start July 10, 2023  and will be done every week  at sundown during the season.
  5. The Village will apply barrier spraying in backyards, when requested by property owners, up to 4 (four) times per season with backpack sprayers. To request this service please use this form to REQUEST MOSQUITO CONTROL SERVICES.   Village parks will be sprayed when and where necessary to reduce mosquito populations, especially prior to any large public events.

The Village of Middlefield monitors the mosquito population within the Village limits from May through September thanks to a grant provided by the Ohio EPA. This is done by surveying large areas of standing water for mosquito larva. If active mosquito larvae are found, they are treated using Teknar CG and Spheratax SPH, which are naturally occurring bacteria and/or Altosid Briquets, which is an insect growth inhibitor. Altosid interferes with the normal life cycle of the mosquito and prevents the development of adult mosquitoes from larvae.  Areas in the Village of Middlefield with excessive mosquito populations are sprayed in the evenings when mosquitoes are most active, with a permethrin based insecticide; using our truck equipped with a ultra low-volume mist sprayer.
